Laure Mary-Couégnias’s poetic visual world is largely inspired by art history, blithely co-opting pop iconography, Surrealist influences and primitive painting. Onions, gherkins, lemons and aubergines come alive in dynamic compositions. Where the pictorial treatment of her "subjects" evokes a joyful innocence, the plants and animals she paints are often strange, sometimes even disturbing. Looking at her works, we are struck by an attractive but worn world, subject to deviance, which she treats with humour and irony.
